Berimbau

A musical instrument consisting of a circa 1,5 meter-long wooden bow with a tight, steel string, and a resonating body made of a dried gourd. The string is struck with a wooden rod (baqueta). The pitch of the tones is modulated by pressing a stone or coin to the string. Beside the baqueta, the hand striking the string holds a small rattle.

There are three types of berimbaus:
1. Gunga (for deep tones, bass)
2. Medio (for middle tones)
3. Viola (for sharper tones, used for improvisation).

The berimbau is the most important instrument of the Capoeira (see photos).
