Lavagem do Bonfim
Bahia's largest festival takes place on the Thursday before the third Sunday in January.
Carrying vases filled with water and flowers, Candomblé *) devotees climb the 8-kilometer-long path from the church Nossa Senhora da Conceição da Praia in the lower part of town up to the Igreja do Nosso Senhor Bom Jesus do Bomfin. Thousands of people, among them drummers and other musicians, accompany the procession. On reaching the crest, they wash ("lavagem") the steps of the church. Afterwards, a daylong public festival begins.
