Exú, also: Eshu
Messenger of the gods with contradicting aspects, obeyed and feared. Ambassador of the Orixás *), mediator between the Orixás and mankind. Also guards offerings, roads, houses and cities.
Ritual ceremonies commence with a sacrifice made to Exú, entreating him to establish a line of communication with the Orixás and to cause no damage, done for Exú being considered jealous-natured, impulsive, impudent, unpredictable, a trickster and possible trouble-maker. He can cause confusion, quarreling and sexual longing.
His attributes are the trident, spear and iron phallus.
