In Niger, I spent the Tabaski Festival in Dosso. Here I had the chance to see the cavalry of Djermakoy, Mohammedans whose appearance had hardly changed since the Crusades - except that their armature and saddle blankets were made of straw instead of iron, and were stuffed into tight cushions to withstand the sharp points.
