In 1957 I was commissioned by the magazine O Cruzeiro to travel to Cuba and make a report on Hemingway. In a suburb of Havana I also saw the Festival of the Virgin of Regla, the Catholic version of worshipping the sea goddess Iemanjá. A multitude of Santería-cult disciples accompanied the procession in honor of this black virgin, and they danced to the sound of drummers.
