One carnival group named itself 'The Sons of Obá'. Obá is the African king who became Xango *), the God of Thunder. Xango's syncretic pendant is the holy Hieronymus. And the image of the Catholic saint illustrates this syncretism: on his head he carries the symbolic double-axe of the African god.
